Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

The Ohio State game starts and Emily decides to put Owen on his belly for a little "tummy time".  She puts him down on his football mat, turns around to walk back to her seat on the couch, sits down.....and exclaims, "He just rolled over!!!!!"

Suddenly what was happening in the game became 2nd in my head.  I immediately thought back.....yes, I did see Em put Owen on his stomach......and now he's laying on his back and staring at us.  He did roll over.  That was pretty cool.

So, I immediately grabbed my cell phone and snapped this photo of him right after the big accomplishment:  (just wait till he pottys in the toilet for the 1st time, me cell phone will be present for that one too.)

After that initial roll over, Em had to put him back on his tummy to see if he would do it again (and also so I could get a picture of it).  He did not disappoint:

I'm not sure what the average age babies are when they start rolling over, but Em & I are convinced that he's pretty advanced.  (Em even asked if I thought if it might be a record.)  I'm going to start him on Algebra next week.

Lollacup

Am I becoming the kind of parent that sees a product for his kid and HAS to have it?  I don't even do that for myself.  If I see an item being advertised that is really cool I will make every excuse in the book of why I don't need to buy it.

I guess those rules do not apply to items for my boy.  I just purchased TWO $18 sippy cups.  The kid is only 2 1/2 months old.  HE WON'T BE DRINKING OUT OF A CUP FOR A LONG TIME.  But he is set when he decides to take up that art.

I first heard of the cup while watching one of my favorite shows, Shark Tank.  In that show, entrepreneurs take their product / idea to a 5 person panel of millionnaires / billionnaires to try to sell them a % of their business in exchange for capital and their partnership to make their product a success.

Here is a youtube clip of the show when the inventors of Lollacup were on it.

My 2 lollacups came in the mail today and I can't wait for The Dude to start drinking out of them.

I'll try harder not to be a complete pushover.....except when it comes to sippy cups.

I Told You So

Everyone laughed at me when I got my own personal "manly" diaper bag.  Everyone thought it wasn't necessary.

(OK, not everyone....I actually got a few comments from guys that it was genius and that they wish they had thought of that.)

Last weekend, Em, Owen, and I flew to Kansas City for a wedding.  As we travelled through the airport, Em had Owen in the Baby Bjorn on her chest and carrying the blue, flowered diaper bag on her shoulder.  (Em calls the color blue, but in reality it is more like turquoise.)

(As a side note, as we were packing for the trip, I even suggested to Em that we take the OSU backpack as the diaper bag.  She declined.)

So we are sitting in the boarding area waiting to board the plane and somehow it becomes my job to carry the diaper bag.  I only carry the bag down the ramp and onto the plane when a flight attendant looks at me......looks at the bag I'm carrying.......and says, "Nice bag.".....very sarcastically.  He then went on to say, "I can say that because I'm a male flight attendant."

As soon as we got to our seats a laughing Emily said, "You never have to carry it again."

My point is justified.

I Have To Be Careful With This Post

When Owen was a day old and still in the hospital, Emily and I were talking to the nurse who was in charge of watching him at that time.  She wasn't the first nurse to say it, but she blurted out, "He is just so cute."

Every other time I heard that proclamation, I just took it as a matter of fact.  Of course he was cute.  I thought so too.  But then I started thinking, Doesn't every parent think their baby is cute?  Is there such a thing as an "ugly" baby?  Is it wrong of me to ask?  So, I did the unthinkable and I asked the nurse if she really thought Owen was cute or did she just say that to everyone.  She looked at me right in the eye, and said, "Not every baby is cute.....trust me."

This subject came up again recently when I saw a picture of a baby on Facebook that made me do a double take.  I called Emily over to see if I was seeing things correctly.  She confirmed.....it was.....an ugly baby.  (Please do not think that it was a picture of any of your babies.  It wasn't.  I promise.)

With all of this in my mind, I stumbled back on that awesome website Awkward Family Photos.com.  I was startled with what I found.  Check it out for yourself:

That picture led me actually googling "ugly baby".  (I'm not proud of myself.)

If you haven't seen the Seinfeld episode about the ugly baby, I highly encourage you to watch it.

6 - 7 Weeks

Making it perfectly obvious that the only reason he is so content is that he just finished eating.

Mom & Owen in a totally "non-posed" picture

"Haven't you taken enough photos of me already?"

Chilling out after witnessing Owen's 1st OSU game & OSU victory
(On a side note: Is it just the camera angle or is my hand really that huge?)

Come Here!! Look At This!!

As the end of my high school years came to an end, a running joke that my class had was to proclaim that something we were doing was the last time we were ever going to do that activity.  Some of the ones I remember were:
  • This is the last time we have a home basketball game
  • This is the last time we will ever all go to Taco Bell together
  • This is the last time we will ever throw a Mr. Partee Appreciation Day (don't ask).
Those proclamations would typically get a sad reaction from the girls....and then the guys would laugh at them.  Pretty standard stuff, really.

Having your 1st child....is the exact opposite....but still similar.

At least once a day, Emily will yell my name and loudly exclaim to "Come Here Quickly!!!"  Before I have a chance to processs the information, I typically have thrown my laptop onto the ottoman....and hopefully don't pull a muscle in my aging body as I fling myself as quickly as I can to wherever they may be.  Thinking I may enter the room finding limbs missing and an ambulance on the way.....or maybe a wolf has made its way into our house and cornered my wife and child......I typically just see Emily staring at Owen proudly.....look back at me.....and exclaim......."Owen just sucked his thumb for the 1st time."

We've had a lot of "1sts" recently.  I'll share with you a few highlights:

Grabbed my shirt for the 1st time (that one was a while ago)

Found (and utilized) his thumb (Sidenote:  Emily discovered that Owen was sucking his thumb by 5 weeks, and "the book said that 3 month olds typically have found their thumb.....so by comparison....Owen is "advanced".)

Found a different digit to suck on besides his thumb

Discovered his WHOLE hand to suck on

We may have a genius on our hands.
