Tattoos: Don't Read This, Mom

I've been playing around with the idea of getting another tattoo for several years now.  Em even got me a gift certificate for a tattoo at a really nice tattoo place in Omaha when we used to live there that I haven't used yet.

I guess I'm very particular with choosing tattoos.  I like them, but there are many "rules" that I have for tattoos before they go on me:

-I have to like it now and believe I will like it in the future (won't go out of style)
-It has to be something meaningful to me
-I'd like it to be unique

I'm sure there are other rules too, but those are the most important ones.

I told Em that I might think about doing something to commemorate my children on my body.  I've thought about names or birth dates, but that seemed a little too "over done".  Then I thought that a great idea would be to tattoo their handprint (only 1) on me.  I thought that might be a nice, meaningful tattoo.  The problem arose recently when I googled pics of that same idea.  They didn't look good at all.  Do you agree?

I am not as in love with the idea as I once was after seeing those (and others).  My other concern is that if Emily and I have multiple kids, I would feel like I need to do the same thing for all my kids.  That would be all well and good.....but I think my body would end up looking like the final scene of the Blair Witch Project.  And that's not a good thing....

So, I'm open to suggestions from all of you.  What is a great idea for a tattoo to commemorate my little one?

  1. A definite NO on the hand print!! I think the birth date is really cute:) Also, I have seen (when the child is old enough to write their name…pretty young still, in little person hand-writing)..having that tattooed! Food for thought;)

    1. It's funny that you suggest the name written by the toddler idea. I was actually telling Em that I had seen Tommy Lee's tattooed wrists where he had put his 2 sons names written by them. They looked really good. Great minds think alike. (Still open to other ideas though too.)

  2. I am glad you chose against the hands. They look pretty bad. Kids write or I should say print pretty large and uneven...just a thought.
I was floating down the lazy river last summer when I noticed the woman in the river ahead of me had commemorated the birth of her 4 children on her body. She had their actual birth footprints in a walking possition accomanied by their names. WOW When her firm youthful skin gives way to age... well lets not go there.
I know you have good sense so I'm sure you will do something senseable.

  3. First of all, didn't you read the title of this blog entry, Mom? You weren't supposed to read this one. (Just kidding).
But to put your mind at ease, the tattoo artist can shrink the letters to whatever size you want, and the imperfections of the child's handwriting makes it more unique in my opinion.
Maybe I'll have your (soon to be) newest grandchild write "Grandma" for your 1st tattoo!
